Planning Your Elopement: Because Love Doesn't Need a Guest List
Ditch the spreadsheets, say goodbye to venue tours, and forget about seating charts with a dozen cousins you haven't seen since childhood! Intimate weddings and elopements are all the rage for couples who crave a celebration focused on love, adventure, and ditching the stress. But don't be fooled by "intimate" – these pared-down ceremonies can be bursting with personality and pack a serious punch when it comes to unforgettable memories. Whether you're dreaming of "I do" on a mountaintop or a simple courthouse ceremony, this guide will help you plan your perfect intimate wedding or elopement, all while capturing those moments in photos that will have you reliving the magic for years to come.
First off, are you looking to elope at Ann Arbor’s City Hall? Here are the basics:
Ceremonies at the 15th District Court are done on Fridays only, and by appointment. You must have your license in hand prior to the ceremony, in addition to two witnesses and the $10 marriage fee. I’d contact the court six weeks in advance, at minimum, as they do tend to book up.

Now that we’ve talked about logistics, I’m excited to share some tips for eloping in the city of Ann Arbor:
Embracing the Intimacy: Elopements offer a raw, magical intimacy that celebrates just the two of you. The stolen glances, the whispered promises, the feeling of being completely present in each other's world – it's pretty amazing. As a photographer, I've witnessed countless elopements, and each one has been a privilege to capture. These intimate ceremonies are so powerful- they often “cut through” the chaos of what a normal wedding day is and you really see what matters.
Capturing the Story: When it comes to elopements, my approach is all about storytelling. Whether you're saying "I do" in a quaint courthouse or exchanging vows in a picturesque park, I strive to be a silent observer (as much as possible- sometimes you have to adjust that flyaway), capturing the raw emotions and authentic moments that make your relationship unique and especially “you”.
Thinking Outside the Box: Don't be afraid to get creative when choosing your elopement location! If you have your heart set on a particular spot, but you're not sure if they allow ceremonies, it never hurts to ask. You might be surprised by the possibilities that open up when you're willing to think outside the box. I had a couple elope on the steps of a library during Covid… not that I suggest renegade ceremonies without permission, but it was pretty magical.
Bringing Your Vision to Life: Your elopement should be a reflection of who you are as a couple, so don't hesitate to personalize every aspect of your day. Don’t be afraid to buy the dress or suit of your dreams, and you definitely do not have to wear white! All these little details are your call. Choosing vendors who support or share your vision could also help. We’re all happy to provide suggestions and guidance if asked.
Navigating the Logistics: Planning an elopement may seem daunting. While I can’t apply for your marriage certificate or book your city hall ceremony, I am more than happy to talk through the details with you to make sure you get the experience you’re hoping for.
Weathering the Storm: Michigan weather can be unpredictable, but with a flexible mindset and a backup plan in place, we'll make sure your elopement is nothing short of magical. Rain or shine, we’ll make sure you get photos of your day that authentically tell your story and reflect your relationship, without getting soaked. Unless you’re the type of person who’s down to run through some mud puddles in their wedding dress- I’m down for that too!
Imagine your intimate Ann Arbor elopement, beautifully documented. Let's make it happen!
