Example Wedding Day Schedule- With a First Look

An Asian groom smiles happily at his bride during their first look in Farmington Hills.

You’ve decided to do a first look- amazing! Here’s a recent schedule from a wedding (both the ceremony and reception were at the same venue) where the couple decided to do a first look. This couple had a small wedding party and they had someone bring their dog immediately following the ceremony for some photos. We had plenty of time for everything, and the couple even had a chance for some alone time right before they entered the reception. I always encourage a bit of cushion time throughout the schedule to make sure nobody has to rush and things run on schedule, or best case, run a bit early. Who doesn’t love that?!

Wedding Day Schedule

2pm- Photographers arrive, and document getting ready
Note: Please have all the wedding day details (dress, shoes, invite, etc.) all gathered in one spot and have the dress unpacked and on the hanger of choice.

3:30pm- First look and portraits around the venue

4pm- Wedding party photos

4:30pm- immediate family photos
Note: I always make a list with every couple to ensure we capture all the combinations they’re looking for. I advise scheduling about 2 minutes per small group, and 3-4 minutes per large group. If you would like to document larger extended family photos (above 15 people), we may need more time.

5pm- Couple and wedding party relaxes before the ceremony
Note: Photographers will document all decor and guest arrival.

5:30pm- Ceremony!

6pm- Ceremony complete! You’re married!
Note: Couple signs license

6:15pm- Couple has photos with their dog, and a few more portraits by themselves in front of the ceremony floral arch.

6:30pm(ish)- Couple joins cocktail hour!

7pm- Guests seated

7:15pm- Couple announced into the reception
Note: Cut cake immediately upon entering. Catering staff often prefer this so they have a chance to cut and plate the cake or dessert while guests are eating dinner.

7:20pm- Toasts/speeches
Note: I encourage toasts and speeches before dinner because you have everyone’s attention at this point, and it leads to better photos and videos. A lot of couples want candid photos of their guests at the reception and that can be difficult if the prime moments are in the middle of dinner. No one wants photos of themselves eating, I promise.

7:30pm- Dinner service begins
Note: Factor in about 1.5 hours for typical dinner service, but ask your catering staff for an estimate.

8:30pm- Couple sneaks outside for sunset photos, if wanted.

9pm- First dance

9:05pm- Parental dances

9:10pm- Open dance floor!

10pm- Photography coverage complete
Note: I ALWAYS check in before departure to make sure you don’t have any last requests.
